NEWSPAPER// Day 6: The Front Page

The second half of day six involved completely re-designing the front cover of the paper. We feel that this is the most important part of the paper and the one we need to get right; this is the section that will grab the audiences attention and this is the section which will be photographed for promotion and portfolio.
This is the general layout and design that we came up with. Closely based on our design sketches from the rapid idea generation stage of the design sprint. It was extremely useful to pull out these drawings when we needed to redesign. The new look of this is a lot more subtle, and suitable for the aim of the paper, mainly because the design looks more professional, more realistic, therefore achieving its aim of mocking the news in a more efficient way. We used this shock bright pink for the spaces that the images would sit in as a guide to the colour and formation they could take in the future. One other addition to this format is the nav bar style contents bar which appears directly under the title. The aim for this is to provide a brief overview of topics and content covered within the papers pages.

This is detail of the furniture sitting at the top of the page.  We chose to cut this back from the previous edition, where the information appeared in the top right.  This version is a lot clearer and offers the information in a simple format, easy to read and less desperate to impress.

Something we had to consider for the cover page of the paper was the large space we saved for a cover image. We knew this would either have to be an image relating to an Aubergine -or- an image relating to the lead article. In this case the lead article was about boris Johnson's false crack addiction. We decided that the name was all the branding the paper needed on its cover, and opted for a large image relating to the cover story, above this is depicted by the flute, a joke about crake pipes. We then decided to experiment with some illustration, this was done in illustrator and comprises of a selection of crude crack pipes creating a colourful pattern. This results in both a decorative illustration for above the page content, drawing the reader in and a suitable link to the news story below.
